Heart Healthy Cinnamon Oatmeal

This whole grain oatmeal not only satisfies hunger, but is also full of heart healthy ingredients to keep your cardiovascular system running smoothly.

Breakfast sets the tone for the day. We can’t think of a better way to kick things off than with a hearty bowl of old fashioned oats, topped with health-minded ingredients that support a healthy heart.

Whole grain old-fashioned oats (not the instant kind) are full of soluble fiber that support cardiovascular health. Oats contain a special kind of fiber called beta glucan that creates a gel-like texture when mixed with liquid. This helps create a feeling of fullness, promotes good bacteria in the gut, and helps support healthy blood sugar levels.

The toppings on oatmeal can make or break the healthy benefits of having a bowl of oatmeal.

Stick with a small amount of pure sweetener like honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar.

Make sure milk is unsweetened to keep from insulin spikes.

Use unsweetened almond butter. Many brands contain corn syrup or sugar. Opt for a natural brand with the only ingredient being almonds.

Fresh berries add a pop of brightness to the morning along with heart-healthy benefits. Blueberries are the ideal choice because they’re low in sugar, but more importantly, they’re chock full of antioxidants that help support the health of your arteries.

Flax seeds are one of the richest plant sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and Alpha Linoleic Acid. This type of fat helps support the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response.

Tip: It’s important to use ground flaxseeds to get the full benefits from them. Simply grind seeds in a personal blender or spice grinder and store in a dry spot in an airtight container.

Cinnamon fasting tea crystals add spice to each bite of oatmeal and helps support healthy blood sugar levels.

A drizzle of almond butter adds a nutty flavor and even more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Almond butter trumps peanut butter in the omega-3 department making it a healthier choice.
