This icy and refreshing drink is a combination of two powerhouse antioxidants, providing the perfect way to cool down on the hottest days with no artificial ingredients!
The slushies we grew up on were full of artificial flavors, colors and loaded with sugar. Delicious as they were, they ranked low when it came to health benefits. This grown-up version will remind you of summers of the past but with real watermelon flavor and the earthy goodness of matcha tea.
Watermelon is a summertime staple with high water content, delicious natural sweetness, and antioxidants to boot. This fruit keeps you hydrated and even supplies electrolytes that are depleted when we sweat. Watermelon contains a unique antioxidant that is known for the pink and red pigment it adds to fruit and vegetables. Lycopene helps protect the body from free radical damage that can cause oxidative stress. You’ll also find lycopene in tomatoes and grapefruit.
Matcha is high in chlorophyll in comparison to other green teas because it’s grown in the shade resulting in higher production of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps make hemoglobin which carries oxygen throughout the body for optimal function. Matcha tea contains l-theanine, an amino acid that produces calm, focused energy and alertness. L-theanine may also strengthen brain function and improve memory.
A small amount of agave nectar adds sweetness to the matcha layer. You can omit the agave for a less sweet slushy.
Before making the slushy, watermelon is frozen. This will create the icy effect when it is blended without using extra ice. Freeze cubed watermelon for at least 4 hours beforehand. A little bit of fresh lime juice adds a refreshing tart flavor and helps facilitate the blending of the frozen watermelon. A high-speed blender works best for blending up this smoothie.
